The Middlesex Student Union held its annual Results Night at 6 pm on Thursday, 10th April. The event took place in MDX House and had the SU announce their newly elected officials, congratulating the winners in a celebratory fashion.
The roles of MDXSU Student Trustee, Education and Activities officers, as well as that of President were all up for grabs. Additionally, the ever-so-popular £200 prize draw had its winner set to be revealed.
The afternoon leading up to the event was quite lively, with many members of the SU helping prepare for the event by setting up an elegant decorative theme. Golden-black balloons were propped up by their Welcome Desk, Step & Repeat banners arranged for photos, and a pop-up bar with all kinds of drinks was prepared for attendees. Of course, a red carpet and stage were also placed as the centre of attention for the main event.
The evening itself went by smoothly, with candidates arriving slightly ahead of the remainder of the guests to mingle and get ready. Candidates reported feeling excited and happy to be there, but also anticipatory and nervous. Overall, what seemed to help them cut through the slightly tense atmosphere was a sense of satisfaction at having “[...] given it [their] all during the elections,” as candidate for the role of Activities Officer Zion Law-Sandell put it.
Head of Engagement and Influence Sarah Redman stated that “It’s so amazing to have seen some truly excellent candidates during this election cycle,” later adding that she was “impressed by the quality of campaigning, the manifestos, as well as candidates’ design skills.”
As the venue filled up with guests and the cameras started rolling, the main segment of the event commenced. After a brief speech, some honorary awards were given out to a few candidates. These included the ‘Kindest Candidate Award’ to Aivin Saji, the ‘Best Banner Award’ to Lisa Pinto, the ‘Best Manifesto Award’ to the aforementioned Zion Law-Sandell, and the ‘Best Overall Campaign Award’ to Sharmarke Ahmed. What’s more, the anticipated £200 Prize Draw Winner was announced to be Zarith Zahari.
Last, but by no means least, the winners of the SU elections were finally revealed, having won their positions thanks to more than 5,000 student votes.
The winners and their respective new positions are: Bosui Mbuli as ‘Student Trustee’, Richa Khanchandanias ‘Education Officer’, Aivin Saji as ‘Activities Officer’, and Mohit Vyasam as ‘MDXSU President’.
When asked for comments after she had her photos taken, Ms Khanchandani shared that winning the position of Education Officer had her feeling “Excited, grateful,” adding “I can’t believe I did this — we did this.”
Mr Saji, now Activities Officer, had the following to say: “I’m looking forward to this year. I think my experience as the [previous] president of the SU [helps me] bring some experience,” and later announced his goal: “I want to see more cultural inclusivity on the campus.”
Mr Vyasam, now the current MDXSU President, when asked how he was feeling, shared: “I’m just feeling very thankful for everyone who voted, who campaigned; thank you so much.”
Moving forward, the newly elected officials will be representing the student body at Middlesex to the University itself, as well as to any external audiences. Whether it's in matters to do with the student community, enriching the student experience, or by making a significant impact on students’ overall academic experience, the MDXSU stands ready as always to help, improve, and enable students to make the most of their time at university.
