Middlesex Students’ Union (MDXSU) exists to help you make the most of your time at university. Led by students and for students, we are central to the university experience and work to support all aspects of student life:
When you join Middlesex University as a student, you also become a member of Middlesex University Students’ Union. We are independent to the university and are a registered non-profit organisation, and all our profits go back into improving the student experience.
MDXSU is led by five full-time Student Officers who are elected into their roles by the student body through our annual Elections each March. They work with elected Student Voice Leaders for each year of each programme at MDX, as well as alongside other students and student representatives from across the University. While our Student Officers direct the work of MDXSU, they are supported by a team of 25 permanent full-time MDXSU staff who run MDXSU's opportunities and services, as well as part-time student interns and staff.
As a charity, our work is also overseen by a Board of Trustees. You can find out about the board here. Our Articles of Association and by-laws guide define our purpose and guide our work as an organisation.
We are you! We are a union of all students at Middlesex University. We are independent of the university and a registered non-profit organisation. We are the voice of Middlesex students, representing you in university decisions and campaigning for changes you want to see on campus and beyond. We organise events - from employability-boosting workshops to our fun-filled Freshers' events - as well as overseeing societies and your student media.
As well as supporting students to make improvements at the university, we can also provide independent, one-to-one support if you're facing a specific problem with your programme. Click here to find out more about the MDXSU Advice service.
If you're a registered student at Middlesex University in London, you're automatically a member of MDXSU.
We are led for students, by students! Your Students' Union is led by three full-time, elected Student Officers - one President, an Education Officer and an Activities Officer who represents you as a student at Middlesex University, in the local community, and on a national level.
Our Student Officers are all students at Middlesex and they were elected into their current full-time, paid roles as part of our annual MDXSU Elections every March. They work closely with all Student Leaders, including but not limited to, Student Groups Leaders and Student Voice Leaders for each year of each programme to ensure that MDXSU is effectively representing students.
The officer team is assisted by a team of MDXSU staff, who oversee and run our multiple opportunities and services.
For contact details for our officers and staff, please click here, or email our Welcome Desk team at mdxsu@mdx.ac.uk.
We are independent from the University. However, we do work very closely with them, and they provide us with a funding grant. It is our job to make sure students are satisfied with their university experience and to represent student views to the university.
Yep! We are a registered charity and are funded by money raised through our events and merchandise, as well as a grant from the University. As a non-profit organisation, every penny we make goes straight back into your university experience!
To join Student Groups and book tickets for events through our website, you'll need to sign in. If you're a student at Middlesex, click the student login button and enter your university email and password - this will be the same as your UniHub login. Staff or guests can also create an account.
If you're having problems logging in, please email mdxsu@mdx.ac.uk
We're based on the Middlesex University Hendon campus downstairs in MDX House along with the Middlesex University Sports Department and the Fitness Pod gym. Our Welcome Desk is open from 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday during term time.
Middlesex University Students’ Union exists to improve the lives of Middlesex University Students. Our Vision has been developed for MDXSU collaboratively by our students, our student leaders, our staff team, our university and our local community. We are proud to be a democratically led organisation and it is therefore vital that our future is shaped by students rather than a proscriptive and restrictive vision. As an organisation that values inclusivity and innovation, we need our vision to be broad enough to support a diversity of approaches and new ideas. Our Vision, is, therefore, a statement of our values and our purpose rather than defining outcomes and objectives. Click here to download a detailed document of our strategy.
OUR PURPOSE We exist to promote equity for individual students, citizenship within our university and justice in the world around us.
Equity – Tackling the causes of inequity for our students and breaking down barriers to achievement.
Citizenship – We believe in a university made up of active citizens rather than passive consumers.
Social Justice – Our diversity and our students lived experiences of injustice are why we emphasise empowering our students to tackle unfairness.
OUR AMBITION In order to achieve our purpose as an organisation we need to advance four key ambitions in our work.
Leadership – Our ambition is that every Middlesex University student will shape their university whilst studying and will leave with the skills to shape the world in the future.
Wellbeing - Our ambition is that every Middlesex University student will study in an environment that is positive for their wellbeing
Networks – Our ambition is that every Middlesex University student will belong to strong and diverse networks that positively shape their time at university and their future.
Social Action – Our ambition is that every Middlesex University student will take part in social action as a core part of the student experience rather than as an ‘extracurricular activity.
OUR APPROACH In order to achieve our purpose and our ambitions we need an innovative and inclusive approach.
Culture – We are passionate about our students' extraordinary talents and abilities and therefore will always try to create paid opportunities to turn their knowledge and skills into action.
Governance – We recognise the importance of transparency, integrity, consistency and expertise in ensuring we are a compliant and sustainable organisation.
Voice – We will focus on developing innovative ways to engage with our membership, our university and our local community whilst also building our reputation as a values-based organisation.
Partnerships – We need evolving, diverse and sustainable partners within our university, our sector and our local community to advance equity, citizenship and justice. These partnerships will be based on mutual understanding and shared values.
MDXSU is strongly committed to ensuring all students are treated equally, without discrimination. For further information about this, you can read our Equal Opportunities Policy here. Click here to download a detailed document of our strategy.
