Got an idea for Change?
Submit a petition and make it happen!

How does it work?

1

Come up with your idea

Inflexible timetables keeping you on campus all day?

Food options too bland, boring, or expensive?

Want the SU to run an important campaign?

2

What’s not suitable here

Want to start a new society?

Contact the Communities Team or Activities Officer

Want some support with your assignment/appeal?

Email studentadvice@mdx.ac.uk or contact Officers directly

3

Writing Your Supporting Statement

Every idea needs a short statement. Include:

  • Problem - What needs to change?

Example

  • Why does it need to change?
  • Solution - How can it be fixed?
4

Turning Your Idea into a Campaign

Once your petition is live, it needs support. Treat it like a campaign! We’re going to shout about it, now you need to too!

  1. Build a campaign identity - Name, slogan, or visual (e.g. “No More 3-HourGaps”)
  2. Start with your circle - Friends, course mates, societies, group chats
  3. Go where students are - Posters, flyers, QR codes, shout-outs in lectures and events
  4. Use social media - Short videos (TikTok's/reels), posts, and clear calls to action (“Sign now, share with 3 friends”)
  5. Keep up momentum - Share milestones and thank supporters (“200 signatures in 3 days!”)
  6. Be present & passionate - Your energy inspires others
5

Top Tips for Engagement

Not everyone will be convinced right away. Use the Apathy Staircase:

  1. Experience - How does this affect them?
  2. Injustice - Why is it unfair?
  3. Visioning - Show what change could look like
  4. Action - Explain what you’re doing and how they can help
6

Submitted my idea, and I’ve been campaigning, now what?

Your petition is live for a month, and if it gets enough support (15 votes) , your idea will head to Union council to be voted on.

If it passes there, it will be taken on by the SU and the officers to make it happen! Check out the events calendar to see when the next Union Council is!

Launching an idea and running a campaign is a huge achievement – you should be proud of yourself.
