BSc Computer Science, First Class Honours, Data & Insight Senior Coordinator
Graduating with a first class honours in BSc Computer Science is something I'm incredibly proud of. But alongside my studies, the past year has also seen me grow closer than ever to the MDX Students' Union and take on challenges I never expected to be leading.
From Student to Organiser
Working at the Welcome Desk gave me a front-row seat to student life at MDXSU. It was during this time that I spotted something that felt like a missed opportunity: boxes of old SU merch sitting downstairs, untouched and collecting dust.
During a conversation with my colleague Bianca, we asked ourselves "why let perfectly good stock go to waste?" From there, the idea for Throwback Thrift began to take shape.
Making It Happen
We did our homework first: going out and gathering data from students to understand what they'd enjoy and expect from an event like this. With those insights, we developed a full floor plan and designed a range of interactive activities to keep the energy going throughout the day, including a lucky dip, mystery bags, and upcycle stations.
We pitched the whole concept to our seniors at MDXSU and they were so impressed by our preparation that we were given the go-ahead straight away. On the day, we sold 30 mystery bags, over 20 lucky dips, and raised around £800 in total, all of which went towards funding brand new SU merch.
What's Next
Now I'm returning to the Students' Union as Data & Insight Senior Coordinator, ready to put my skills to use in a new setting. This year taught me that the best ideas can come from simply paying attention and that with the right preparation, you can turn a small observation into something that really matters.
I can't wait to see what the new academic year has in store, and to keep growing alongside such a great team.
