Medical Science Student, Best New Student Group Award
As a first-generation university student from a BTEC Applied Science background, my journey at Middlesex University has not always been straightforward. There were moments I seriously considered dropping out. But I kept going and I'm glad I did.
Finding My Path
When I started university, I enrolled in Biomedical Science. Many of my peers came from A-levels backgrounds and had prior knowledge of concepts that were completely new to me. I often felt behind and questioned whether I belonged in higher education at all.
Instead of giving up, I looked for an alternative that would allow me to build on my own strengths while continuing my academic journey. After careful consideration, I transferred to Medical Science. That decision changed everything.
Rising to the Challenge
Since making the switch, I have worked hard to close knowledge gaps, develop my confidence, and prove to myself that my educational background does not define my potential.
This year, I achieved first-class grades while balancing the demands of a part-time job alongside my studies. It wasn't easy but it showed me that where you start does not determine where you can go.
Building Community
Beyond academics, I wanted to make a meaningful contribution to university life. At the beginning of the academic year, I founded the Eastern European Society to create a community where students could connect, celebrate their cultures, and support one another.
What began as an idea grew into an award-winning student group as we were honoured to receive the Best New Student Group Award.
Looking Back
My proudest achievement is not any single grade or award. It is overcoming the challenges that made me doubt myself in the first place. My journey has taught me that success is not about where you start, but about resilience, adaptability, and the determination to keep moving forward when things become difficult.
I hope my story encourages other students, particularly those from non-traditional backgrounds, to believe in their abilities and recognise that there is more than one path to success.
