The Middlesex University Race Equality Charter Student Survey

Deadline to complete the survey is Friday 21st January 2022

What is it all about?

In order to move ahead meaningfully as an organisation, we need to take an honest look at where we are. This includes reviewing University Data related to Race Equality and also learning more about the experiences and perspectives of colleagues across our community.

Middlesex University & Middlesex Students' Union are currently working towards an application for the Race Equality Charter. Advance HE’s Race Equality Charter (REC) provides a framework through which institutions work to self-reflect on and identify ethnic/racial institutional and cultural barriers.

The survey aims to expose and eliminate racial inequality, and develop an inclusive culture that values all students – but we can’t make any meaningful advancement until we know how our students truly feel.

To help us better understand what we’re doing well, and equally importantly not so well, we’re asking you no matter what racial or ethnic group you identify with, to please find some time to complete this anonymous survey.

Your responses will help us develop an action plan of what we need to improve and how we need to change.
We are inviting you to join our focus groups or one-to-one interviews on the issues raised in the survey. Please email REC@mdx.ac.uk to express your interest in taking part in a focus group or being interviewed

Through this survey we want to hear your views on studying at Middlesex University so we understand what we are doing well, and not so well, and what you think we can do to further tackle racial discrimination and advance race equality.

The survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete, and your responses will be saved if you decide to return to the survey to complete it at another time from the same browser.

Why take part?

This survey is part of a wider piece of work looking to understand the culture of Middlesex University and advance race equality. The majority of the questions in this survey have been pre-determined by Advance HE.

We want all Middlesex University London students to complete this survey. By taking part you are helping us to identify areas for improvement, and ways to make those improvements that will ultimately benefit you directly.

We will provide avenues for feedback so you can see what we found from the survey, and how we plan to take action based on it.

Data security and anonymity

Throughout the survey, please only answer the questions with which you are comfortable. There are a combination of fixed-response and open-ended questions.

All data will be held in accordance with the requirements of the Data Protection Act - you can view our privacy notice here. Data will only be viewed and accessed by the Middlesex University Race Equality Charter Data and Survey Sub Group.

Responses to the survey will be completely anonymous and kept strictly confidential. At no point will the information you provide be shared in a way that would allow you to be personally identified. After each section you may be asked for any further comments on the aspects covered. Please avoid identifying yourself or other individuals (including staff) in your comments.

You will be able to withdraw your data after you have submitted your responses to the survey, if you wish, by making a note of your unique identifier (on the next page). Email REC@mdx.ac.uk and cite this number to do so, by the end of this academic term.

Support

NB: Depending on the nature of your experience during this time, some of the questions may be sensitive to you. If so, please feel free to stop, and/or withdraw from the survey at any point.

We appreciate that members of our University community will have experienced racial discrimination at various points in their lives. If you are impacted by any issues related to the questions in the Race Equality Charter and would find it helpful to talk about your concerns and the impact on your wellbeing in a safe space, please email careandconcern@mdx.ac.uk.

If you would like to report an experience of racial harassment or discrimination, we would invite you to do so through 'Report it to Stop it' and one of the team will contact you to talk through how we can best support you. The Student Union advice team are also on hand to support with free and confidential advice through the independent MDXSU Advice service.

If you would like to speak with someone for emotional support you can contact the MDX Counselling and Mental Health team for a one-off appointment by using their call back request form.

If you require support before, during or after completing the survey, want to discuss any element of the survey or give your feedback on it, or want more information about our involvement in the Race Equality Charter, please e-mail us at REC@mdx.ac.uk.
